It's the VE Day 80th Anniversary celebrations happening this May and as part of that, as a person of colour, I felt it necessary to also acknowledge the much valued input from people of colour during the 2nd World War.
The May Pop Up on Weymounth beach will be followed up by a Black History month venue based event this October 17th in Dorchester.
Having looked around the local area of Dorchester and spoken to a few I was surprised to realise that not many are aware that African American GI soldiers were stationed in Dorset in 1944.
Also, during my research I came across a film that was released late last year..The 6 triple 8, about the African American female army members who played a significant role during the 2nd world war.
As a professional vocalist, my aim is to not only to share knowledge about these incredible people but also to share the songs that kept them going.
This is where my Pop Up performances come in. There will be two happening on Wednesday 7th of May on Weymouth beach. Weymouth and other significant areas in Dorset played a crucial role in the defence mechanisms used during the 2nd World War and it is my aim to perform a few songs that not only uplifted and kept African American soldiers going but also uplifted an army of soldiers of various races on that beach.
Through this project we aim to educate in a respectful way, uplift and unite. It is hoped that this event is a prelude to a bigger and more informative Black History month event this October.
For me, I feel some of the input and help from people of colour during the 2nd World War is slightly under the radar and if you feel, like me, more should be done to bring this to light any donation to support this project is very much appreciated.
We aim to inspire, educate and motivate at our VE Day Pop Up and as I have a charity single release which is a reggae dub trap version excursion of Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again song, we also aim to mix the 'ole skool' with the new during the performances of songs as part of the Pop Up.
Thank you,
Angie Anuforo
Black troops served in all major military branches during World War Two. From logistics and transports to pilots and aircrew, naval crewman, frontline troops, and medical personnel, black people from around the world made a strong contribution to the war effort and I would like to show representation for this. I feel the above information is under represented and as a Sponsor you help redress the balance.
This will definitely show the Sponsor in good light, who has an awareness and acknowledgement of historical fact and is of good standing and education and who believes others plus the youth and younger generation should be made more aware.
